Stillness: Monthly Report – May 2018

How has the Month been for Stillness

apparently, moving == no time for anything else. I have been so unexpectedly busy the last half of this month, so little got done on Stillness. 😦

I did however, get some bits of work done earlier in the month, so thats good. mostly writing and planning stuff.

What I said I would do (and did it get done) –

  • Finish rewriting the intro dream sequence (done)
  • implement all the SFX (nope)
  • Playtest (yes)
  • Polish Level 1 (nope)
  • Stretch:
    • Finish level 2 (haha no)
    • Start level 3 (see above)
    • Mock up more conversations scenes (a bit yes)
    • Paper prototype the emotional control mini-games. (all the nope)

What got done-

So i finished the new dream sequence twine version, and playtested it, along with playtesting what i have already. It went pretty well. I will prolly be updating it eventually to be in game.

Similarly, I’ve been looking into changing the main room, to look more like this:

perspective.png

(benefit of art-style: concept art looks like gameplay !P)

basically changing the perspective shots of the levels to feel more present, and looks prettier. downside is less reusable art assests, but whatev. the point of the simple art was to be easy to make, so It should be fine.

I’ve sketched up most of the rest of the apartment’s screens, and will probably begin working on them after I get the new dream sequence set up in game.

with that, I’ve also been experimenting with the text box. I’m looking into the possible setup, that it expands and shrinks to fit the line of text, ala Hiveswap, or Dream Daddy. I haven’t quite nailed what I’d like it to be, but its close. I’d have it already if unity’s canvas weren’t such a dingus, and the content size fitter let you control directions of expansion, but noooooooooooooooooooo.

Other that that, moving into my new place has taken all of my time, so thats it.

Time Spent –

  • Writing the new dream sequence – 3 hours
  • bedroom art mock up – 2 hours
  • other writing – 4 hours
  • messing around with the text box – 2 hours

What to do next-

So, I didn’t get all the sounds in from grey, so I should probably get on that…

and of course, the opening scene needs more art to fit with it, given the opening shot is good for just that, opening. I also wanna look into doing some interesting camera tricks to help make the game feel more alive desite its mostly still art. I’m looking at games like You Left Me, and this grasshopper romance game I saw at GDC that I have the business card for somewhere…. (unpacking is still not done, as of writing). anyways, it should make the game feel even better.

Following that, I’ll likely begin redoing all the apartment screens, which coincides nicely with polishing it up, and reworking the puzzles.

so, in list form:

  • implement new dream sequence
  • implement all the SFX
  • Playtest
  • Polish Level 1
  • Stretch:
    • Finish level 2
    • Start level 3
    • Mock up more conversations scenes
    • Paper prototype the emotional control mini-games.

Closing Notes-

why is moving so time consuming! why did no one tell me! :{
